Santorini is famous throughout the world for its unique morphology which was shaped by the massive eruption of 1450 B.C, when its greater central part collapsed in the sea forming the Caldera.
The Caldera is a basin 400m deep, with an existing crater 10km wide. The villages of Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli, Oia, and parts of Akrotiri and Megalochori are built on the Caldera. These villages offer to the visitor a breathtaking and totally unique view. Everybody remembers the first time they witnessed the view of the caldera with the volcano in the middle of it– they remained breathless for a couple of seconds!!
Built inside the rocks and “hanging” from the caldera cliff are the “canaves”, typical Santorinian Cave Houses once used by the locals to produce wine. Staying in a hotel or a self-catering house on the caldera is a unique experience! There is nothing like enjoying a Santorinian quality wine along with good friends and loved ones while watching the sunset or the view of the caldera at night!
The spectacular views of the Caldera attract millions of visitors each year, and have made Santorini the no 1 place for weddings worldwide!
